Dalwhinnie is one of the highest distilleries in Scotland at 1164 feet above sea level and set in the beautifully scenic Cairngorm National Park. The name Dalwhinnie is derived from the Gaelic word Dail-coinneeamh - meaning 'meeting place' - referring to the meeting of ancient cattle drovers' routes through the mountains. The visitor centre tour was awarded 'Best Distillery Tour of 2017' by Drinks International and callers at the distillery are taught about whisky and chocolate pairings. The Dalwhinnie single malt itself is one of Diageo's bestsellers and is used as the signature malt in the Buchanan's blend.
Winter's gold is made from spirit distilled only between October and March. The theory being, that the colder temperature of the copper stills during the winter months intensifies the character of the whisky.
