Bushmills 1975 Single Cask #217 Millennium Malt for Northern Bank
Lot number: 126-06453
Winning bid: £230
All of the whiskey bottled under the Bushmills whiskey brand is produced at the Bushmills Distillery and uses water drawn from Saint Columb's Rill, which is a tributary of the River Bush. With the Old Bushmills Distillery being officially registered in 1784 by Hugh Anderson, it is claimed to be the oldest whiskey - with an 'e'! - distillery in the world.
The distillery is a popular tourist attraction - with around 120,000 visitors per year - and in recent years has enjoyed engaging celebrity ambassadors and hosting a music event, Bushmills Live.
This whiskey was originally laid down in bourbon casks in 1975 with an eye on the millennium. Private investors were invited to purchase entire casks long before it was bottled. Each cask was bottled at 43% ABV, with the label bearing the name of the cask owner, or whatever else they wanted to put on it... The whiskey was never intended to be released for general sale, but they do come up occasionally. There is no age statement on the bottles, but they're all judged to be about 24 years old.
