Crawford's Old Irish Whisky
Lot number: 0592874
This lot failed to meet its reserve.
This half bottle of Crawford's Special Old Irish Whisky was bottled before the Irish distillers and blenders adopted the 'e' in their whiskey.
Hailing from the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries, this bottle has a driven cork and a lead capsule and wonderful fill level for a bottle of its age.
Due to the rise of Scotch blended whisky, which was quickly surpassing Irish as the world's favourite thanks to the use of patent continuous stills, four leading Dublin distillers published 'Truths About Whisky' in 1879. In the aftermath of the publication, Irish whisky has an 'e' added to distinguish it from Scotch, but this was adhered to in a very piecemeal fashion.
