Lot number: 068-2968
Winning bid: £11,000
William Grant founded Balvenie distillery in 1892 using the 18th century mansion known as Balvenie New House. It is built just below Glenfiddich, sharing its Robbie Dhu springs water source. The distillery still uses its own floor maltings and locally-sourced peat.
This magnificent fifty year old was released before the brand's rapid ascent to the levels of popularity it enjoys these days. Even so this limited bottling sold out in jig time, and was one of the oldest whiskies ever bottled at the time.
1937 was the year when Amelia Earheart vanished, the Dandy was first published in Dundee, and the Hindenburg Disaster sowed the end of airships; so to coin a phrase from our own Big Peatrie, this is a piece of "liquid history"!
