Macallan Lalique 55 Year Old
Lot number: 078-3007
Winning bid: £29,500
The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. Now owned by the Edrington Group, The Macallan prides itself on its Six Pillars, which include its curiously small stills, very narrow 'cut' of new make spirit and exceptional cask management. It is the most sought after whisky for collectors, regularly setting records at auctions all round the world.
Macallan are justifiably proud of this long aged Sherry Monster, and have teamed up with French crystal specialists Lalique in order to provide a vessel that befits a whisky of such pedigree. The hand crafted decanter is based on a perfume bottle from 1910, designed by Rene Lalique himself.
We can only guess at the delights contained within, but the tasting notes suggest something that's both familiar and unusual at the same time; with Macallan's traditional rich, sherried style being followed by light peated notes that hark back to Macallans of old.
