The 88th Auction
Ended August 5, 2018
Well a very warm welcome to our 88th Auction ladies and gentlemen! This month we have an affluence of shiny new and old bottlings for you to feast your eyes upon so let’s get this show on the road!
First up we bring to you an extremely rare bottling of White Horse blend that was bottled in 1939. That’s right, a genuine piece of liquid history! Released before the post-war changes in excise law, this White Horse was bottled at a time when the single malts at its heart were of limited production. The blenders had only been granted permission to use Lagavulin the decade before this blend was bottled.
Next for a seriously matured Glen Grant 67 Year Old distilled in 1949 and bottled by Gordon and MacPhail in 2016 as the last in a series of three exclusives. Presented in a handsome cylindrical wooden case, the bottle comes with a smart booklet including a handwritten bottle number and signed by whisky writer Charles MacLean. This Glen Grant was distilled well before the Speyside distillery’s 1973 revamp when everything was still coal-fired.
Speaking of black fuel, we have a highly-esteemed and reverential Bowmore Black 1964 1st Edition. Matured in first fill Sherry casks and lain in Bowmore’s No.1 Vault, the ‘Black’ has earned a reputation as a single malt of absolute quality and distinction. This was a first release out of five and was bottled in 1993 when a bottle sold for £100; an astounding amount at the time. We suspect this premium Islay ‘Black’ might go for a bit more!
Highlighting the variety in Islay, we have a Bunnahabhain 1975 40 Year Old released as range number 7 of the Artist Series by La Maison du Whisky. Released in bottles featuring designs by various artists, the Artist Series aims to bring new life to dormant casks. This 40 Year Old features a piece of work called ‘Original Creation’ by Lino di Vinci; and after years of Bunnahabhain being mainly considered as a base for blends, it’s only fair their own malt ‘creation’ finds the spotlight.
Speaking of originals, this month sees a couple of exciting newcomers from Arran. First, we have the 20 Year Old ‘Brodick Bay’ released as Volume One from Explorers Series. The retro designs on the tins celebrate the idyllic beauty of the Isle of Arran with this one featuring the island’s main town and - if you look closely - Brodick Castle. In harmony with the ‘Brodick Bay’ we have another 20 Year Old release, this time for the Arran Malt & Music Festival 2018!
Righ chaps, we hope you enjoy! There's a wealth to scroll through so get stuck in and remember…
Don’t lose your bottle!
