Glenfiddich 21 Year Old Havana Reserve in Box
Lot number: 096-07351
Winning bid: £200
Glenfiddich was founded in Dufftown by William Grant, who had honed his craft at Mortlach distillery; and on Christmas Day 1887 the first spirit ran from the stills. Thanks to Grant's tenacity and stubborn self belief, the distillery flourished during a period of turbulence in the industry, and has grown to become one of the best selling brands of single malt whisky in the world, only occasionally trading the number one spot with fellow Speyside behemoth, Glenlivet.
Still owned by the Grant family today, the pioneering distillery is responsible for a lot of "firsts" in whisky world. Perhaps most importantly, they were the first to really promote the idea of drinking whisky as a single malt as opposed to in blends. They were also the first distillery to open their doors to the public, sparking a trend that has undoubtedly benefited the Scottish tourist industry greatly.
Boasting a solid core range of expressions that are easily accessible to whisky newcomers, yet have layers of complexity that appeal to seasoned connoisseurs alike. There's a reason Glenfiddich is numero uno!
The story goes that when this bottling was released it caused a stir in the US markets due to the associations with the dreaded Cuba that its label implied. This led to its name being changed on later batches to 'Gran Reserva' and later to 'Caribbean Rum Finish'. It's still pretty much the same whisky inside the bottle but the history makes these first releases under the 'Havana' banner spark a fair few glints in most collectors' eyes.
