Lot number: 098-03783

Winning bid: £360

For a period, Campbeltown was the undisputed Whisky Capital of World, boasting over 30 distilleries operating simultaneously at its peak. Locally available peat, barley and coal, coupled with a quick steamship service to Glasgow meant this thriving industry lasted into the early 20th Century. Alas; ultimately (and perhaps inevitably) it proved unsustainable, and by 1935 the bubble had well and truly burst, with only Springbank and Glen Scotia distilleries remaining.

Springbank

The family owned Springbank is unique in that it remains the only distillery in Scotland where 100% of the production process is carried out on site, and while it produces three distinct styles (in Springbank, Longrow, and Hazelburn), its eponymous Springbank expression still accounts for the lion's share of production. A medium peated, two and a half times distilled spirit, Springbank is complex, robust and never boring!

Matured for the full term in small 60 and 80 litre casks - the Rundlets and Kilderkins, which provide much more wood contact over its 10 years. As a consequence the whisky tastes much more mature beyond its years.

Longrow

The first distillation of Longrow was carried out in 1973 as an experiment, when the Chairman of Springbank Distillery set out to prove that it was possible to produce an Islay style single malt whisky on the mainland. Given that you can see Islay from the other side of the Kintyre peninsula, this didn't seem like much of a stretch. The experiment proved a success, and so Longrow was distilled again a few years later and has gone on to become an important part of the company's portfolio, with regular distillation having taken place since 1992.

The second release in Springbank distillery's Rundlets and Kilderkins series, this Longrow was maturing in 60 and 80 litre casks between November 2001 and January 2013. As we know, small casks mean lots of wood contact, and this combines Longrow's rustic smokiness with lots of wood influence for a sweet and peaty dram.

Hazelburn

With the first distillation taking place in 1997, Springbank's triple distilled, un-peated Hazelburn expression was launched in 2005. Named after the original Hazelburn distillery, which was once the largest producing distillery in Campbeltown, and where the Grandfather of Japanese whisky, Masataka Taketsuru learned his trade; this light and fruity dram has proved a hit since its introduction.

The third and final release in Springbank distillery's Rundlets and Kilderkins series, this Hazelburn was left to mature in 60 and 80 litre casks (the Rundlets and Kilderkins of the title) between 2003 and January 2014. Small casks mean lots of wood contact and this combines the elegant Hazelburn with lots of wood influence for a sweet and oaky dram.
