The 102nd Auction

Hi folks, welcome to our September spread. Mirroring the leaves turning a crisp golden brown, this auction is filled with deliciously aureate malty treats for you. A good chance to catch a bargain for when the winter nights begin to set in.

Firstly we have the Ledaig 42 Year Old Dusgadh. This is the sister bottling of the Tobermory 42 Year Old and is apparently some of the smokiest whisky of its age. As this is some of the first spirit to come from the new stills after the distillery’s reopening in 1972, the bottling has been dubbed with the Gaelic word Dusgadh meaning 'awakening': each bottle comes with a memento card made from the copper of the now retired stills from whence this spirit came.

A regular here but always worth a spot in the limelight is the Glen Grant 50 Year Old from legendary cask curators Gordon & MacPhail. This month we are blessed with not one but two of these dark-fueled senior spirits so no need to fight.

Riding on the dark-fueled 50 Year Old theme, we have - from the Far East lost distillery - a Karuizawa 50 Year Old Single Cask. This bottle was released as part of a possible pair, with a matching bourbon cask. The two together make up the Japonisme bottling that was released to celebrate LMDW 60th Anniversary. The stunning bottle comes with an array of fan merch including pictures, dried ink, an ink plate, a brush and stamp. Of course, right?

Now, a first for SWA and a chance to get your hands on some true liquid history we have the Brora 1978 40 Year Old 200th Anniversary. This golden liquid has been selected from just 12 American oak hogsheads by Master Blender, Dr Craig Wilson. Only 1819 bottles have been produced - reflecting Brora’s foundation year. The bottle is adorned with the distillery’s emblem of the Scottish wildcat and comes enclosed in a deep burgundy velvet display case. As Brora is currently being brought back to life, this bottle is a fantastic way to reminisce about the ups and downs of the two centuries of malt history.

Let’s not forget some new releases from Islay this month. Rolling in with abundance we have the latest from Ardbeg; Islay's Singing Sands, the Traigh Bhan beach lends its name to this Ardbeg with the label dramatically stating it was bottled during a storm. The latest age statement expression has been matured in American oak and ex-Oloroso Sherry casks. From just down the road, we also see this year’s Lagavulin Jazz Festival 2019 release. Celebrating their 21st festival these 21 Year Old bottles have been matured in a combination of refill and recharred American oak hogsheads before being bottled at a healthy 50.1%!
