For a period, Campbeltown was the undisputed Whisky Capital of World, boasting over 30 distilleries operating simultaneously at its peak. Locally available peat, barley and coal, coupled with a quick steamship service to Glasgow meant this thriving industry lasted into the early 20th Century. Alas; ultimately (and perhaps inevitably) it proved unsustainable, and by 1935 the bubble had well and truly burst, with only Springbank and Glen Scotia distilleries remaining.
The family owned Springbank is unique in that it remains the only distillery in Scotland where 100% of the production process is carried out on site, and while it produces three distinct styles (in Springbank, Longrow, and Hazelburn), its eponymous Springbank expression still accounts for the lion's share of production. A medium peated, two and a half times distilled spirit, Springbank is complex, robust and never boring!
Back in Campbeltown's heyday, the majority of barley used in whisky production would have been produced locally, but since local agriculture focus has shifted, this is no longer feasible. The Springbank Local Barley series recalls those halcyon days by using only locally sourced ingredients, to create something that is uniquely Campbeltown. The quality and scarcity of these bottling make them highly coveted by collectors and aficionados.
