William Sanderson - who was born in Leith in 1839 and started an apprenticeship in the liquor business at only 13 years old - was persuaded by his son in 1880 to start bottling blends; and so he trialled a hundred casks of blended whisky, hired a panel of expert tasters, and decided upon Vat 69 as the best.
