For a period, Campbeltown was the undisputed Whisky Capital of World, boasting over 30 distilleries operating simultaneously at its peak. Locally available peat, barley and coal, coupled with a quick steamship service to Glasgow meant this thriving industry lasted into the early 20th Century. Alas; ultimately (and perhaps inevitably) it proved unsustainable, and by 1935 the bubble had well and truly burst, with only Springbank and Glen Scotia distilleries remaining.
The family owned Springbank is unique in that it remains the only distillery in Scotland where 100% of the production process is carried out on site, and while it produces three distinct styles (in Springbank, Longrow, and Hazelburn), its eponymous Springbank expression still accounts for the lion's share of production. A medium peated, two and a half times distilled spirit, Springbank is complex, robust and never boring!
Frank McHardy's contribution to the Scotch (and Irish) whisk(e)y industry is immense. He started with Invergordon Distillers, leading to Tamnavulin, Bruichladdich and Bushmills, before returning to Springbank in 1996.
This special edition was bottled to mark Frank's 40 years in distilling.
