Bruichladdich 10 Year Old Dramfool's Jim McEwan Signature Collection 3.1
Lot number: 128-00982
Winning bid: £200
Mothballed by previous owners Whyte & Mackay, Bruichladdich distillery was revived in the year 2000 by independent bottler Murray McDavid. For a long time the distillery was the black sheep of Islay, on account of producing unpeated whisky in order to meet its owner's blending requirements. Contrary to general expectations though, this also made it a hit with the locals who were presumably sick of the sight of peat.Since its resurrection - and under the guiding hand of maestro Jim McEwan - Bruichladdich hasn't shied away from experimentation in cask management, quadruple distillation, love-it-or-hate-it presentation, and the introduction of the heavily peated Port Charlotte and (REALLY heavily peated) Octomore ranges. Oh, and they make a mean gin too.
‘The Jim McEwan Signature Collection’ is the coming together of two men with a passion for Islay and Bruichladdich’s finest output - Jim McEwan (a legend who needs no introduction) and Dramfool’s Bruce Farquhar.
However, what this partnership will become is far more important than the meeting of two likeminded men of whisky. The ‘Jim McEwan Signature Collection’ will be an archive of not just the production of Bruichladdich, by its most famous son, but of the journey the distillery took with experimentation and variety. Only possible with foresight and creative control that McEwan was given. The Signature Collection features expressions from the non-peated Bruichladdich, traditionally peated Port Charlotte and the world’s most heavily peated malt Octomore. As commented by Dave Broom on Jim McEwan’s retirement, his output was an ‘innovative and thought provoking portfolio of single malts that challenged previous perceptions in the category’.
