The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. Now owned by the Edrington Group, The Macallan prides itself on its Six Pillars, which include its curiously small stills, very narrow 'cut' of new make spirit and exceptional cask management. It is the most sought after whisky for collectors, regularly setting records at auctions all round the world
Anniversary Malt:
Macallan’s first Anniversary Malts were released in 1983, comprised of a 1957 Vintage 25-Year-Old, and a 1928 vintage 50-Year-Old which was, at the time, the oldest whisky every bottled by the distillery. While the 50 was a one off, the 25 went on to form part of their core range right up until 2004 when the “Anniversary Malt” suffix was dropped, and the Fine Oak was introduced. We’re pretty sure the eponymous anniversary doesn’t pertain to any milestone that Macallan was marking, more likely it was targeted at consumers looking for something to mark their own anniversaries.
Given the affordability of these releases at the time, many will have been opened and enjoyed, leaving scant few available on the second-hand market today.
