In Louisville, Kentucky in 1870, George Garvin Brown filled and sealed a glass bottle of bourbon for the first time striving for consistency and quality in all future bottlings. He named that spirit Old Forester after Dr. William Forrester who worked as a pharmaceutical salesman: the second 'r' was dropped from the surname when he retired. During Prohibition, the company now known as Brown-Forman were able to legally produce alcohol for medicinal purposes. This allowed sales to stay steady during this period and helped the huge popularity boost after the act was repealed.
Here at Scotch Whisky Auctions we don't condone giving bourbon to 12 year olds, even if it is their birthday!
Thankfully on closer inspection, that isn't what this bottle is about. Released annually to celebrate George Gavin Brown's birthday of September 2nd. The spirit that is used in this release is matured for 12 years in just one warehouse, right next to a heat cycling duct which exposes the barrels to high temperatures resulting in some intense woody characteristics.
