Macallan Red Collection 71, 74 & 78 Year Old 3 x 70cl
Lot number: 138-07483
Winning bid: £200,000
The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. Now owned by the Edrington Group, The Macallan prides itself on its Six Pillars, which include its curiously small stills, very narrow 'cut' of new make spirit and exceptional cask management. It is the most sought after whisky for collectors, regularly setting records at auctions all round the world.
A new £140 million subterranean distillery and visitor centre on the Easter Elchies estate was opened to the public in the summer of 2018 and has since won several awards for its architectural quality; with its exciting features including glass walls of vintage whiskies, a circular pod of copper pot stills, and a Boutique reflecting those in Dubai and Heathrow airports.
The Red Collection: 2020
At this point we’ve pretty much run out of superlatives and hyperbole to cope with the latest and greatest releases from Macallan. The dust had barely settled on their 72 Year Old Lalique decanter when the Red Collection was announced, featuring not one, but three whiskies aged for more than seven decades! Taking inspiration from founder Alexander Reid, who’s surname means “the red one”, this show stopping range is also noteworthy for having been crafted by Macallan’s first female Master Whisky Maker, Kirsteen Campbell, who took the up the reins in 2019. To mark the release, a one-off set of bottles, with labels illustrated and signed by artist Javi Aznarez, was sold at auction. The considerable proceeds were donated to City Harvest London, a charity who provides meals to vulnerable people.
