Winning bid: £400
Based in Edinburgh and built in 1855 by Graham Menzies & Co, for decades Caledonian - affectionately named 'The Cally' - was the largest distillery in Scotland. With its proximity to transport links such as the Forth & Clyde canal and Haymarket station, the distillery's success during a national boom lead to an oversupply of grain whisky in the market which in turn produced a period of financial troubles and saw the regulated division of the market between distilleries. Despite years of success before and after its acquisition by DCL, Caledonian was closed in 1988 as part of United Distillers' mass consolidation. The building now acts as residential housing but the 300ft chimney still stands as one of the tallest Victorian towers in Scotland.
